Idaho among most popular states for new residents in 2017

Americans are moving westward, flocking to the Mountain and Pacific West, according to the United Van Lines' 41st Annual National Movers Study, which tracks customers' state-to-state migration patterns over the past year.

The Mountain West continues to increase in popularity with 54 percent of moves being inbound. In Idaho, 63 percent of moves were inbound during 2017 — making Idaho the state with the third-highest inbound rate nationally.

Among those who left Idaho in 2017, 56 percent did so for a job; meanwhile, only 32 percent of people moving to Idaho came for work. 25 percent of people reported coming to Idaho to retire.

Those who reported moving to or away from Idaho for family did so in the same numbers: 28 percent.

66 percent of newcomers to Idaho are ages 55 or older, and nearly half have a yearly income of $100,000 or more. Just 5.8 percent of people who moved to Idaho in 2017 were under the age of 34.
