POST FALLS — For the first 10 minutes on Tuesday, Post Falls looked like a team that hadn’t played a game since Dec. 23.

Uncommon turnovers.

Missed shots.

The next 10 minutes were more like that team that finished 3-1 in the top division of the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.

Post Falls built a 12-4 lead after the first quarter, then outscored the visiting Lewiston Bengals 38-11 over the second and third quarters on the way to a 58-26 win in a 5A Inland Empire League game at The Arena.

“We talked about our effort before the game,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “And our effort was there, but it seemed like we were in slow motion. We’re trying, but it’s like we were in slow motion. We were making the right decisions, but passes were a little high and those kinds of things. Then we got on a little bit of a roll and broke it open.”

Lewiston cut the deficit to 12-7 early in the second quarter before 3-pointers by Bailey Gleaves and Sydney Parks started a 13-0 run midway through the second to pull away.”

“Our practices, we’ve had four, six and five players at practice the last three practices we’ve had,” Allert said. “We’ve had kids sick, on vacation and practices hadn’t been great, and it looked like it. Lewiston wasn’t their sharpest either.”

Post Falls (11-2, 1-0 5A IEL), which had a game last Friday postponed due to weather, travels to Coeur d’Alene on Thursday.

“We’ve got practice, game, practice, game for the next two weeks,” Allert said. “We’ve got to have better focus in practice over the next couple of weeks. We’ve still got a way to go to get where we want to be, but we’ve got time to put it together.”

Cameron Cady scored seven points for Lewiston (11-3, 1-1), which was without leading scorer Kendyll Kinzer, who missed the game with a knee injury.

Lewiston finished the game with nine field goals, compared to Post Falls with 22.

“We can make all the excuses we want,” Lewiston coach Dave Cornelia said. “We’ve got to play with the kids we’ve got here. Hopefully we get Kendyll back soon, but who knows. The girls that were here need to play better than that, or we’re not going to beat a school for the deaf and blind. We’ve got to take care of the ball better than that. Early on, I thought we defended well, but we can’t score 26 points in a game and expect to be in the game.”

Lewiston hosts Moscow on Thursday, then travels to Lake City on Friday. Lewiston hosts Post Falls on Jan. 12.
