North Idaho College’s Parker Technical Educational Center in Rathdrum is the recipient of a 2017 Outstanding Project Award by Learning by Design’s Architecture and Interior Design Awards.
Architects West, located in Coeur d’Alene, was architect-of-record for this project.
Learning by Design’s publication is an educational leaders’ guide to architectural services. All projects entered were reviewed and judged by a panel of distinguished education architects, planners, and facility construction and operations professionals.
The 110,960-square-foot Parker Technical Education Center opened its doors to students in September 2016. The center was designed to accommodate eight programs: advanced manufacturing/mechatronics; automotive technology; collision repair technology; CAD technology for architecture and engineering; diesel technology; industrial mechanic/millwright; machining and CNC technology; and welding technology.
The facility was designed to create instructional spaces that focus on students. There are numerous student study/break areas, adjacent to both labs and classrooms, and staff offices are intentionally placed adjacent to labs to encourage student/staff interaction. Designed to be intentionally flexible, the structure’s safe lab spaces reflect the current industrial workplace, and can adapt to future expansion.
The full design team included: Architects West, Opsis Architecture, LSB, Coffman, Trindera and J-U-B Engineers.
Architects West was founded in 1973 and has been specializing in educational facilities since. Today, the firm is employee-owned, with a staff of 30, and performs services for educational, municipal, commercial, religious, medical and multi-family projects in Idaho, Washington, Montana and Oregon.
