Howard powers St. Maries past Grangeville in CIL opener

GRANGEVILLE — Dan Howard had 20 points and eight rebounds, leading four St. Maries Lumberjacks in double figures in a 75-61 win over the Grangeville Bulldogs on Saturday in the Central Idaho League opener for both schools.

“It was a pretty good battle,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We had 16 assists as a team tonight, and I thought the ball movement and team play was really good tonight. It was a really good team effort by everyone tonight.”

Kaden Hammond had 14 points, four assists and three steals and Kevin Duffield eight rebounds for St. Maries (7-1), which hosts Bonners Ferry on Thursday.

Trey Dreadfulwater scored 15 points for Grangeville (4-4).

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. — Freshman Jack Kiesbuy hit three 3-pointers in a 25-point first quarter for the visiting Timberwolves in the win over the Wildcats.

“Another nice offensive showing,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said after Lake City (7-5) scored 75 points for the second straight night. “But defensively we made some adjustments at halftime, and to hold them to 15 points in the second half, we were pleased with that.”

James Carlson scored 19 points, Nic McCartin 15 for Lake City.

Preston Esparza scored a game-high 21 points for Eastmont (2-10).

Lake City returns to action Friday at home vs. Coeur d’Alene in the Fight for the Fish spirit game.

POST FALLS — David Bourgard hit four 3-pointers, scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds as the Trojans handled the visiting Wolfpack from Kalispell, Mont., at the Arena.

“David has been playing very well for us,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “Tonight he was given the opportunity to get more shots in the flow of the game, and he took advantage.”

Jake Pfennigs hit two 3-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points for Post Falls (8-5), which made 9 of 15 3-pointers. Tanner McCliment-Call hit three 3s and added 13 points. Alan Ballew had six rebounds, Nate Buer three assists.

“I was happy with the way Nic Morris got us into our offense,” McLean said. “And off the bench, Nate Buer and Casey Walker and Alan Ballew gave us significant minutes tonight.”

Post Falls travels to Lewiston on Friday in 5A Inland Empire League play.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Vikings fell behind by 15 points after the first quarter, then rallied to tie it at 58 with 3 minutes left before falling to the Knights from Missoula at Elmer Jordan Court.

“We’ve lost our last four games, and in all four of them we started out really slow in the first quarter,” Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna said. “They had nine points before we even got off a shot.”

Sam Matheson scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half for Coeur d’Alene (4-6), which hit eight of its 12 3-pointers in the second half. Matheson finished with six 3s, Mason Whittaker hit three 3s and added 13 points, and Drew Hostetter hit 3 3s for nine points. Kale Edwards scored 11 points for the Vikings.

“We dug ourselves a big hole, and especially the way we got beat the other night (70-46 at home by Post Falls), we could have folded it in, but we didn’t, we fought back,” Hanna said.

Sophomore Rollie Worster, a Montana commit, led Hellgate (4-1)with 21 points. Bridger Deden added 19, Logan Riddle 15.

Coeur d’Alene travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.

KELLOGG — Tyler Gibbons went 4 for 4 down the stretch from the free-throw line and Chase Jerome hit a pair of foul shots late to secure a win for the Wildcats over the Bears at Andrews Gymnasium.

“It was a back and forth night until late in the fourth quarter,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said. “We finished 13 for 16 from the line in the fourth quarter and just found a way to grind one out.”

Ryan Morgan scored 13 points for Kellogg (4-3), which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

Cooper Stephens and Gabe Quinnett scored 15 points each for Moscow (2-8), which finished 4 for 19 from the free-throw line.
