Delmar ‘Del’ L. Shaw, 93

Delmar passed away Jan. 4, 2018, after a brief battle with cancer at North Star Assisted Living in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Delmar was born April 4, 1924 in Latah, Wash., to Lydia and Leonard Shaw and was delivered by his grandmother Grandstaff at home. He was the eldest of five children; Wilmurth Straton, Betty Carman, Darryl Shaw and Gene Shaw.

Upon graduation from high school in 1941, he joined the Army in 1942. After completing boot camp and after a 21 mile hike his sergeant said, “Shaw you cut the muster.” Del decided to change direction and joined the 82nd Airborne Division F Company Paratroopers. It was a financial decision on his part. He had many stories to tell at family gatherings.

Upon, his discharge from the Army on Dec. 25, 1945, and returning back to the states, he met Ethel Stiner. They were married in 1946. They had three children, Connie, Delvan, and Linda. He was preceded in death by his son, Delvan, in May of 2017. He is survived by daughters, Connie (Rod) Hazelton and Linda (Doug) Smith, along with daughter-in-law, Sharon. Delmar and Ethel also raised nephew and niece; Richard and Sharon (Eilers) Cook. Delmar is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Delmar began a profitable logging business for many years up until his divorce from Ethel in 1959, and then went to work for Central Premix until his retirement. He was awarded the “Million Mile Award” for no accidents.

Delmar married Mary (Bremner) Alexander in 1967. Mary had one son, Pat Mcllvain, who he was very close to. They enjoyed working their land, had beautiful gardens and loved back country hunting with their horses and mules until Mary’s passing. In his later years, he enjoyed the company of his children and their families, going to Hawaii for two of his grandchildren’s weddings, and camping up at the “river property.” He also loved participating in his “Singles Card Group” and entered many local car shows. He enjoyed showing off his many trophies.

Delmar was briefly married to Tamiko Chard, from April 2008 to June 2010.

Delmar was in numerous organizations, some of which were the Sheriff’s Posse, Eagles, etc. The last four years, Delmar resided at North Star Retirement until his death. He made many friends and participated in their numerous activities. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to North Star and Hospice for their outstanding care and compassion.

The service will be at noon on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, with public viewing beginning at 11 a.m., at Yates Funeral Home, 744 N. Fourth St. in Coeur d’Alene. There will be a graveside service with Military Honors following the service as well as a reception at the Hayden Eagles, 1520 W. Wyoming Ave. in Hayden.

Yates Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements.
