POST FALLS — An elderly woman and her family told police she had an estimated $17,000 worth of rings stolen from her senior living room.

The victim told investigators that two of her rings, including a wedding and engagement ring, were stolen from her room at Garden Plaza.

"This case remains under investigation," Post Falls police Capt. Greg McLean said. "We understand that there’s also a lot of sentimental value with the rings."

The alleged victim’s daughter told police that the last time she saw the rings was when her mother wore them on Thanksgiving.

The 97-year-old woman said she noticed the rings were missing from a plastic container in a dresser drawer on Dec. 22 — three days after two male movers transferred her belongings from one room at the facility to another, according to a police report on the case released this week.

Police interviewed the two persons of interest.

"Both adamantly denied any involvement and have cooperated with our investigation," McLean said.

The persons of interest have also agreed to take a polygraph test to be scheduled this week, he said.

The alleged victim told police the only people who had been in her new residence when she discovered the rings missing had been her daughter and son-in-law. The daughter said her mother has had no other issues with theft in the seven years she’s been a resident at the facility.

The alleged victim told investigators that she kept the rings in a container in a dresser, but she located the container in a different dresser in the bathroom.

"She said after sorting through all her jewelry, she discovered her two rings were missing," the police report states.

The manager of the moving firm told police the job involving the alleged victim did not include packing items, only moving boxes and furniture. She said the two employees have completed many other jobs at the facility with no issues.

The two movers told police they never saw rings, jewelry or any other loose items. Both movers told police that they moved items separately during most of the process and were not in the same room.

The family hasn’t been able to locate any photos or appraisals of the rings, McLean said.

McLean said thefts at Post Falls senior living facilities, including Garden Plaza, have been sparse in recent years.

"Most of the problems are usually caregiver issues," he said. "There are coded doors at Garden Plaza so we know who has been going in and out."
