While the Leeder family plans a memorial service for one son, there is a glimpse of hope in the recovery of their other son.

Jacob Leeder, 16, died, and Jonah Leeder, 20, was seriously injured in a crash Dec. 29 on Interstate 90.

They are the sons of Kootenai County sheriff’s sergeant Tim Leeder and his wife, Wendy, of Coeur d’Alene.

Troy Schueller, principal of Coeur d’Alene High School, where Jacob was a sophomore, told school staff Tuesday that the family has tentatively scheduled a memorial service for Jacob on Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. at Friends of Anthem Church, Miles Avenue and U.S. 95 in Hayden.

“Jake loved CHS and his football family. They are encouraging everyone to wear CHS clothing or a CHS football jersey to the memorial,” Schueller wrote, in a message to staff.

Jonah is still at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Schueller wrote.

“He is still on a ventilator. However, yesterday when his parents walked into the room and said his name, he responded by opening his eyes. This is the first time this has happened.”

Schueller said the family is grateful to Coeur d’Alene High School personnel for their compassion.

“They are worried about the CHS students and staff,” Schueller wrote.

Since the wreck, financial support for the family has flowed in from community members and beyond.

An online fundraising page (gofundme.com/4xp1na8) had raised $31,446 by late Tuesday afternoon.

Donations are also being accepted at Idaho Central Credit Union on behalf of the family. ICCU has branches located in Post Falls, Hayden, and Coeur d’Alene.
