Sandpoint grinds out 4A IEL victory at Moscow

MOSCOW — A dominating second quarter and strong interior defense were big keys as the Sandpoint Bulldogs earned a 39-35 4A Inland Empire League win over the Moscow Bears on Saturday at Bear Den.

Grace Kirscher scored 18 points, Dawson Driggs 11 for the Bulldogs (8-6, 1-0 4A IEL), who outscored the Bears 15-4 in the second quarter while allowing just 12 points in a stingy first half.

“Our inside defense with Calli Laybourne and Natalie Petit was big, it helped us corral Gracey Meyer,” said Bulldogs head coach Duane Ward, whose team had to play with Kirscher in foul trouble for much of the second half. “Our kids made a little run and got us back in there. It was a great team effort. They hung in there, and we’re real happy with that.”

Ward praised the rebounding of Driggs, Katherine Kaul and Ciera Bailey, limiting the Bears’ second-chance opportunities. Meyer led the Bears (6-7, 1-1 4A IEL) with a game-high 18 points.
