Dog rescued from an icy Chuck Slough

SANDPOINT — A golden Labrador retriever was fished from Chuck Slough after becoming stuck in a hole in the ice on Monday.
The rescue call was reported at approximately 12:45 p.m. in the pre-100 block of Canoe Cove Lane. The dog was struggling in roughly 4 feet of water.
A resident of the neighborhood used a kayak to scoot across the ice to the marooned dog, said Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS Battalion Chief Kevin Amorebieta.
“But once he was able to get a hold of the dog, he soon realized that he was not going to be able to make it back to shore with the dog in the kayak,” Amorebieta said.
A Selkirk firefighter in a ice-rescue suit ventured onto the ice and helped haul the man and dog to safety.
“He did a good job. He was able to hang onto the dog,” Amorebieta said of the Good Samaritan.
Amorebieta said Selkirk Fire rolls heavy on dog rescues in adverse water conditions due to the distinct likelihood that a person nearby will attempt to save it and risk their own safety.
“When there’s a dog in the water or on the ice, most likely, someone is going to go after that dog,” Amorebieta said.
Selkirk Fire’s apparatuses are also equipped with ice-rescue equipment and firefighters undergo routine training for safely mounting cold-water rescues. Amorebieta said firefighters coincidentally trained with Kootenai County officials just last weekend.
“The quicker they call us, the quicker we can get out there,” said Amorebieta.
