A resident of the Mineral Community Hospital’s long-term care who had influenza passed away on Jan. 9, according to a statement from the hospital.

The hospital has had seven confirmed influenza positive cases with long-term care residents and a staff member. However, as of Jan. 5 there had been no new cases of influenza reported and no new symptoms. As a result, precautions had been lifted and residents were allowed out of their rooms with frequent monitoring for the illness throughout the weekend.

Children under the age of one, adults age 65 and older and people suffering from certain medial conditions are at a higher risk of serious complications associated with the flu. In Montana, 425 new cases were reported during the first week of 2018 according to the Montana Department of Health and Human Services. During this flu season, 1,441 cases have been reported statewide with 239 hospitalizations and 12 deaths. Flathead County reported the most new cases with 94, followed by Yellowstone and Gallatin County each with 51 cases.

Officials say flu vaccine helps prevent infection for individuals who receive it and helps keep others healthy by making it harder for the virus to spread.
