QUINCY — A surveyor who was struck by an SUV last week in Quincy is facing a hard and expensive road to recovery. To help with medical costs, a GoFundMe page has been set up for people who want to help ease the financial burden that has been placed on the man and his family as a result of the collision.

Leonel Castillo, 48, of La Grande, Ore., was reportedly working in the lanes of state Route 28, in Quincy, when he was struck by a 2001 Ford Excursion driven by Maria Prada, 42, of Quincy. Prada had reportedly entered SR-28 from Fourth Avenue South and told investigators she did not see Castillo.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office reports Castillo was wearing an orange traffic vest and had a traffic cone deployed. Castillo was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center from the scene for treatment of a dislocated skull and blunt force trauma to his head. The injury resulted in brain swelling and Castillo’s skull was reportedly partially removed.

“He is currently medically stable and facing a lifelong recovery. The full extent of Leo’s injuries is still uncertain. However, we do know that the severity of his injuries and the subsequent recovery will come at a high cost for Leo and his family. It will take more than a surveyor’s salary to fend off future expenses,” reads a statement on the GoFundMe for Castillo.

The GoFundMe page set up for Castillo, who is an Operation Desert Storm veteran and father of two young daughters, has a goal of raising $100,000. To make a donation visit www.gofundme.com/LeoCastillo-II.
