Vikings finish strong, keep Cup

COEUR d’ALENE — The Lake City Timberwolves got the draw they wanted, and the lead they had hoped for.
But the Coeur d’Alene Vikings knew what they had coming up later in the dual.
Coeur d’Alene won the last nine matches, five by pin, and overtook Lake City for a 58-24 victory in the 23rd annual Terhark Cup match Thursday night at Coeur d’Alene High.
“We thought they’d get up early,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said of Lake City. “We knew when we hit about 120 we would be into our tougher kids.”
Coeur d’Alene won the Terhark Cup for the 16th straight year, and for the 17th time in the 23 meetings. The match honors Ron Terhark, who started the Coeur d’Alene High program some 50 years ago.
“I don’t think it was our best effort,” Moffat said. “I think our kids thought it would be easier than it was. Give credit to Lake City, they wrestled harder than we did.”
Junior Zane Monaghan started out the match with a pin at 170 for Lake City, which has no seniors in its varsity lineup. Pins by Owen Hughes (285) and Caden Hess (98) increased the Timberwolves’ lead to 24-9.
“That was the weight I wanted to start out at,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Zane has been the anchor of our team; I felt pretty good when it (that weight) was picked out of the hat.”
Down 24-9, two forfeits pulled the Vikings closer. At 120, Hunter Schueller, battling strep throat, earned a decision to tie the dual.
Coeur d’Alene then got pins from Jacob Krous (126), Payton Keough (132), Garrett Ashby (138), Mitchell Moffat (145) and Max Peressini (152).
“Coeur d’Alene has good kids — from 113 to 152, they were solid,” Owen said. “But even then, we had some chances. But I was really proud of our effort.”
Moffat had praise for seniors Art Gustin and Gabe Zanetti, both in their second year of wrestling, who earned wins at 195 and 220, respectively.
Lake City is in the Timberlake Duals this weekend.
Coeur d’Alene returns to action next Thursday, hosting Vallivue and Capital in a tuneup for next weekend’s North Idaho Rumble.
