QUINCY — Ivania Chavez was 3-of-7 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, to finish with seven points for the Quincy girls in their 54-21 loss to East Valley Saturday night at Woodworth Court.
East Valley (12-4, 11-3 CWAC) had dropped a 62-61 decision to CWAC-leading Wapato the night before and rolled into town looking to get back on track against the winless Jacks (0-16, 0-14).
But you have to give credit where credit is due. The Jacks, who were 8-of-38 from the floor, ran with the Red Devils through the first eight minutes. Quincy held on with both hands, making it a nine-point deficit after one quarter. They shot just 21.1 percent from the floor and a little better from 3-point range, finishing the night 4-of-15 from beyond the arc (26.3 percent).
East Valley, who is two games behind Wapato in the CWAC standings, opened the third quarter with four straight steals that went coast-to-coast for lay-ups and that 27-13 lead at the intermission turned into a 39-13 difference and eventually a 43-16 lead by the end of three quarters.
Bryonna Gray, a 5-foot-5 sophomore, gave the Jacks a little spark on the offensive end. She was 2-of-5 from 3-point range and finished with seven points and two rebounds. Corina Cervantes and Chavez had four rebounds apiece and Avery Vander Veen finished with two steals.
The Red Devils, who outrebounded the Jacks 16-3 in the first half, had three players with a game-high nine points. Kalli Willett, Sydnee Hooker and Delana Bivins led the way for the conference runners-up.
Even though things spiraled out of reach for the Jacks, a lot of it was credited to the Red Devils free-throw shooting. East Valley was 14-of-21 from the line. They also knocked four from 3-point range.
The Lady Jacks are at Wapato on Friday for a game against the conference leaders before returning to Woodworth Court on Saturday to host Grandview.
