Lake City girls win in double OT, clinch second in IEL

LEWISTON — It was a long trip and a long night, but the result was oh-so-important for the Lake City girls’ basketball team.
Host Lewiston rallied in the fourth quarter and hit a late basket to force overtime before the Timberwolves pulled out a 51-47, double- overtime road win to clinch second place in the 5A Inland Empire League.
Keara Simpson scored seven of Lake City’s eight points in the second overtime period, and Klaire Mitchell had 17 points to help Lake City improve to 12-8 overall and 4-2 in the league.
“We led the entire game, but they made a basket with five seconds left to force OT,” coach James Anderson said. “In the second overtime, we were able to get a little lead and force them to foul us, and we made enough free throws to close it out.
“Keara was fantastic in the second overtime, both at the free-throw line and handling the ball,” Anderson said. “It’s such a luxury to have her as an option to bring the ball up the court and beat their pressure. In that situation, the matchup of Keara versus the other team’s post really works in our favor.”
Simpson finished with 14 points and Bridget Rieken added nine for the Timberwolves, who close out the regular season at home Friday versus Lakeland. By finishing ahead of Lewiston (2-4 IEL), Lake City will host the Bengals to open postseason play.
Demi Randall led Lewiston on senior night with 18 points.
