ST. MARIES — Kaci Haeg hit a jumper to give the St. Maries Lumberjacks the lead for good in the final minute of a 43-39 nonleague win over the Liberty Lancers of Spangle, Wash., on Wednesday.
“Both teams were playing well offensively in the first half, and then it became tough both ways in the second half,” said St. Maries coach Jay Sines, whose team was held scoreless in the fourth quarter until Haeg’s shot in the final minute. “We had some good looks at the basket, but it seemed in the fourth quarter someone put a lid on the basket. We’re really happy with the win. In the close games, we haven’t come out on the best of those, but I was pleased with how the girls handled it tonight.”
Haeg finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Madison Cordell eight points and five steals and Devyn Wilson six assists for St. Maries (10-5), which hosts Grangeville in its Central Idaho League finale on Saturday.
Maisie Burnham scored 16 points for Liberty (10-6).

ST. MARIES — Glover Buell scored seven of his game-high 14 points in the second quarter for the Lumberjacks, who were outscored 35-21 in the second half of a loss to the Lancers of Spangle, Wash.
“We kept them off the boards pretty well, but they’re one of the best coached teams around,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We tried to press them a little, but they took good care of the ball. Usually our team speed can turn someone over, but we had a tough time of it tonight.”
