I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the successes that the Libby Area Chamber of Commerce board, staff and volunteers are accomplishing. While attending the Chamber banquet this past Saturday, I was so impressed with the quality, atmosphere and number of attendees. It was a very positive and enjoyable evening. I was also struck by the creativity and number of folks who were involved in the planning and execution of the event.

Truly, I was very proud of Libby Montana that evening, as I witnessed a community really come together.

I want to congratulate the new board, the myriad of volunteers, staff and especially the members both old and new, on a wonderful event. I also want to share my appreciation for those who kept the Chamber alive through some very tough years, keeping a foundation in place for the current successes to build from.

I know there is still a tremendous amount of work to be to bring Libby forward and I want to encourage all businesses to join and become active in an energetic, progressive and growing Chamber.

Again, I appreciate so much the dedication of so many striving to make Libby an even more wonderful place to live and do business.

Winston Churchill stated, “Its not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what is required.” Thank you all for taking the next step — that which is required — and bringing a new energy to Libby. Keep up the good work!

Lincoln County being hurt by state move

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners wants to share our dismay with a recent decision by Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the governor’s office to file a violation against Hecla Mining under the “permit prohibition” provision of Montana Metal Mine Act. We support the Act’s provisions which holds mining operators responsible for cleanup and reclamation of their mining operations. However, we believe the state is misapplying the statute in this instance. Montana Code Annotated 82-4-360 states: “a person may not conduct mining or exploration activities in this state if that person or any firm or business association of which that person was a principal or controlling member had a bond forfeited under this part, if the department otherwise received proceeds from a surety to perform reclamation on that person’s behalf, or if the person’s surety completed reclamation on the person’s behalf.”
