Kempton becomes Post Falls' career scoring leader

POST FALLS — Melody Kempton scored 30 points and became the school’s career scoring leader as the Post Falls Trojans closed out the regular season with a 54-16 victory over the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in 5A Inland Empire League play Thursday night at The Arena.

Kempton, who eclipsed the previous record of 1,377 points held by Katelyn Loper, also had nine rebounds, five blocked shots, four assists and three steals for Post Falls (19-2, 6-0 5A IEL). Kempton now has 1,405 career points.

“The kids did a good job finding Mel inside, and Mel did a good job running the floor,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said.

Bayley Brennan added 10 points, five assists and three steals for the Trojans, and Macky Morris had nine rebounds.

Coeur d’Alene is 6-14, 0-6.

Coeur d’Alene will travel to Post Falls next Friday in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.

RATHDRUM — The Hawks started fast in the first quarter, but the Bears took the 4A Inland Empire League at Hawk Court.

Katie Ryan had seven points and six rebounds for Lakeland (4-13, 0-3 4A), which visits Lake City tonight at 7.

“The first quarter, we played as well as we had all year,” said Lakeland coach Steve Seymour, whose team led 17-15 after the first quarter. “We just failed to take care of the ball in the final three quarters.”

Hannah Broyles scored 15 points for Moscow (7-8, 2-1).

SPIRIT LAKE — Kaylee Jezek scored 14 points for the Tigers in a nonleague win over the Jaguars.

Shelby Starr and Lilly Kelley scored 12 points each for Timberlake (15-3), which hosts Kellogg on Saturday.

“We had some balanced scoring and did a good job on both sides of the court tonight,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “We pushed the tempo really well and their was a lot of positives to take away.”

Bella Murekatete scored 20 points and Rachel Schroeder added 16 for Genesis Prep (9-9), which travels to Lakeside on Tuesday.

“Bella’s hard to guard and so much taller than everyone else,” Miller said. “It’s really unique to have to guard that kind of size and Schroeder shot the ball really well in the first half.”

PLUMMER — Tommia Pakootas scored 16 points for the Knights in a loss to the Bulldogs at Ron Miller Court.

“They hit a few shots early and got the lead spread out a little bit,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “We didn’t play that great of defense tonight and they took advantage of that. We struggled a little offensively, but kept things even in the third, but the damage was already done.”

Lakeside (9-10) hosts Genesis Prep on Tuesday.
