Defense propels Lake City past Lakeland

COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City outscored Lakeland 23-14 in the third quarter to break open a close game, and the host Timberwolves went on to down the Hawks 62-49 in nonleague play Friday night.

Kyle Manzardo had five of his seven steals in the first four minutes of the third quarter for Lake City (9-7).

“We played a really solid third quarter,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. “We picked up the pace defensively, and were able to create some turnovers.”

James Carlson totaled 17 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots for Lake City. Nic McCartin had 13 points and six rebounds, and Hunter Schaffer hit three 3-pointers and added 12 points.

Dylan Vahey scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter for Lakeland (10-5). He hit four 3-pointers, two in the fourth quarter.

On Tuesday, Lakeland plays host to Post Falls, and Lake City travels to Lewiston for a 5A Inland Empire League clash.

POST FALLS — Smith Mwinuka hit 4 of 7 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points as the Jaguars beat the Tigers in North Star League play at Post Falls Middle School.

Junior Williams made 5 of 6 3-pointers and added 17 points and five assists for Genesis Prep (15-4, 8-0 NSL). Jonny Hillman had 16 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and four steals for the Jaguars, who won their 10th straight game.

Caden Crandall, Gryphon Todd and Seth Dechand each scored five points for Mullan (5-6, 3-5), which is in third place in the league.

Genesis Prep travels to Lakeside on Tuesday.

Mullan returns to action next Thursday at home vs. Kootenai.

HARRISON FLATS — Day Day Higgins made three of hit four 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 29 points as the visiting Knights beat the Warriors in a North Star League game.

“We started out pretty slow and it took us a while to get going,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. “Our pressure started to get to them in the second and third quarter and we just kind of wore them down.”

Bryar Sanchez scored 21 points for Lakeside (9-7, 3-3 NSL), which hosts Genesis Prep on Tuesday.

Triston Usdrowski scored 15 points for Kootenai (0-12, 0-6), which hosts Clark Fork today at 4 p.m.

COEUR d’ALENE — Keara Simpson scored 16 points for the Timberwolves, who outscored the Hawks 23-10 in the second half for a nonleague win.

“We got after them pretty good defensively,” Lake City assistant coach Troy Anderson said. “We were riding a lot of emotion off senior night, but overall it was a good team win. Lakeland did a great job and really got after it and played hard from start to finish. Defensively, they were awesome tonight.”

Chloe Teets and Bridget Rieken scored eight points each for Lake City (13-8), which hosts Lewiston in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament next Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Taylor Elpers and Sofi Schnepf scored six points each for Lakeland (4-14), which hosts Sandpoint in a 4A Inland Empire League game on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. to conclude the regular season.
