Haeg helps 'Jacks win CIL title

ST. MARIES — Junior post Kaci Haeg totaled 31 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three assists as the the St. Maries Lumberjacks won the Central Idaho League title with a 62-47 victory over the Grangeville Bulldogs on Saturday.
“She’s always had a knack for getting open,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. “Now she’s fguring out how to score, and it couldn’t come at a better time.”
Kaylee Auer added 10 points, and Devyn Wilson had nine assists and 12 rebounds for St. Maries (11-5, 4-0 CIL), which won its second straight outright league title. The Lumberjacks shared the league title with Grangeville two seasons ago.
On Saturday, St. Maries took charge by outscoring the Bulldogs (8-9, 1-2) 19-7 in the first quarter.
“The girls were really moving the ball well, sharing the ball,” Sines said.
Because of foul trouble, Haeg also spent much of the night guarding Paige Lindsley, Grangeville’s top player. Sines also had praise for Haeg’s defense on Lindsley, who finished with 18 points.
St. Maries travels to Kellogg on Monday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Lilly Kelley scored a game-high 16 points as the host Tigers beat the Wildcats in Intermountain League play on senior night.
Kayle Jezek added 13 points and Shelby Starr had 12 for Timberlake (16-3, 5-0 IML).
“I thought they did a really good job of handling their emotions,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said of senior night. “We’ve had some that have been train wrecks because they got so emotional.”
Timberlake started five seniors and a sixth was the first sub in.
“That’s back-to-back games Kayle Jezek’s played well for us inside,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “And Karissa Willis (eight points) gave us a nice little spark off the bench.”
Kaili Cates scored 10 points for Kellogg (5-8, 1-3), which plays host to St. Maries on Monday.
“They did a nice job of getting to the free-throw line,” Miller said of the Wildcats, who were 15 of 19 from the line.
Timberlake travels to second-place Bonners Ferry on Tuesday in a key IML matchup.

HARRISON FLATS — Brooke Stevens and Kaylee Banks scored 14 points each to lead the visiting Wampus Cats past the Warriors in North Star League play.
“They started in their 1-3-1 half-court trap, and we had some turnovers early,” Kootenai coach Doug Napierala said of Clark Fork (8-8, 5-3 NSL). “And we didn’t shoot the ball well in the first quarter (1 for 10 from the field).”
Kaili Gentry had 17 points, seven rebounds and five steals for Kootenai (4-10, 1-6). Madison Napierala had seven rebounds, Jacey Grange six.
Kootenai travels to Wallace on Tuesday.
