LEWISTON — A subpar effort for most of the night ended up costing the Lake City Timberwolves in a 48-47 loss to the Lewiston Bengals in 5A Inland Empire League play Tuesday night at Booth Hall.

James Carlson scored a game-high 23 points for Lake City (9-8, 1-3 5A IEL), which stepped it up in the final four minutes and had a shot to win it at the buzzer.

“We did not play well for 28 minutes; very disappointing,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “We shot 12 for 21 from the free-throw line, and missed a ton of layups. Considering what we needed to accomplish, we did not play well for 28 minutes.”

Kyle VanBoeyen scored 18 points for Lewiston (8-10, 1-3), which lost by 18 points at Lake City in early January.

Hunter Schaffer added 11 points for Lake City, which plays at Coeur d’Alene on Thursday.

Dylan Vahey scored 12 points for Lakeland (10-6), which pulled within five points early in the third quarter, and missed a shot that would have made it a one-possession game. Post Falls came down and hit a 3, and began to pull away.

“Every time we came close, they put a little spurt on,” Lakeland coach Bill Ryan said. “McCliment-Call and Pfennigs hit big shots when they needed them.”

Post Falls made 13 of 23 3-pointers. Pfennigs made 3 of 5 3s, and Colby Gennett made two en route to 13 points.

“Our effort from our kids was really good,” Ryan said. “We’re playing better basketball than we were a week or two ago.”
