GEORGE — Fire crews successfully extinguished a fire near George after working through the night Sunday to put out the 3,500-acre blaze.

The fire started along Road R Northwest in a rural area located near state Route 281, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet Monday morning. The cause is still unknown.

Power poles sustained damage in the fire, causing temporary power outages to nearby residents. Heavy winds quickly spread the blaze, which covered 100 acres when firefighters arrived on the scene Sunday evening.

Fire crews finished establishing containment lines Monday morning and continued monitoring the site throughout the day.
