SANDPOINT — Idaho State Police rescued a North Idaho man early Sunday morning after he crashed his car during a high-speed chase in western Bonner County.

Yancy Ryan Pugh is charged with eluding law enforcement at the felony level because speeds reached 120 mph during the pursuit, according to court documents.

Trooper Jonathan Cushman said in an affidavit that he encountered Pugh driving in the 10,000 block of Spirit Lake Cutoff Road slightly after midnight. The trooper’s front-facing radar listed the Acura TSX’s speed as 52 mph in a 45 mp\h zone. After crossing paths, the trooper’s rear-facing radar, however, registered the car’s speed at 54 mph and accelerating, according to court documents.

The trooper turned around and pursued the medium-sized luxury car, which sped up to 80 mph, the affidavit said. Speeds reached 120 mph before Pugh turned east onto Kelso Lake Road. where he crashed attempting to negotiate a curve.

Pugh became trapped in his overturned Acura and had to be rescued through a rear passenger-side window, according to the affidavit. Pugh allegedly admitted to trying to outrun the trooper to avoid getting a speeding ticket, the affidavit stated.

Pugh, 28, made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Monday via videoconferencing with the jail. Judge Lori Meulenberg released Pugh on his own recognizance and appointed a public defender to represent him, court records indicate.

A preliminary hearing in the case is set for July 11.

The penalty for a felony eluding conviction ranges from one to three years in prison, according to Idaho Code.
