Last week around 20 people showed up at an old house for a party in Superior. But this was no ordinary party, it was actually a painting party arranged by the United Methodist Women’s group. They decided to start an annual mission project to paint a house a year in Superior.

The little yellow house on Diamond Match Road chosen this year was built by the family of a church member, Ed Heppe. His father had built it around 1958, and the people living in the home couldn’t afford to paint it. The women’s committee felt it was a good project to start their new mission, said member Lynda Anderson.

“They were looking for a way to help in the community and contribute to the people, and this was something that came up where a number of people could be involved,” said Pastor Waveland King of the United Methodist Church in Superior. “A lot of things take more skill, but most people can wield a paint brush.”

The painting crew involved members from the church, as well as students from the Superior Business Professionals of America. The local 4-H group was also going to help but the original paint date of June 18 and 19 was changed due to rainy weather, and they could not attend the new date set for last week.

The project was organized by Leslie Heppe, and local Whipped Up restaurant owners Michelle and Scott Van Tassell donated lunch to the workers. Future projects will go through an application process as part of the “Paint a House a Year” program.
