Breathe deep the joy of life, God's blessings

This morning as I walked into my garden I was greeted by a smell.

A honeysuckle vine is a new addition this year and its climbing, green tentacles are now accented with flowers that resemble exploding fireworks in the sky.

The color and beauty of the blooms are fabulous, but what really catches you by surprise is the sweet smell. I am so glad it’s planted near the gate, so I’m intentionally disrupted from my preoccupied mind.

As I enter the garden I’m invited to set my thoughts aside, focusing on a more keen awareness of what is around me, in the present moment. Later on, when I exit the garden, I breathe deep, smelling the lovely flowers, going into the rest of the day with appreciation and thankfulness.

The beauty of North Idaho is something most people can identify with as we look around at the mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, breathing clean air and drinking safe water. First Presbyterian Church of Sandpoint celebrates God’s outdoor cathedral each year by worshipping at Sandpoint City Beach, on the shores of the largest lake in Idaho.

In addition to singing, scripture reading, and prayers, this Sunday, July 22, we have a special “Blessing of the Bicycles.”

Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Beach Hut Pavilion. Then at 10:15 a.m., we dip our bicycle tires in the lake to claim God’s grace, goodness, and love. As an Earth Care Congregation within the Presbyterian Church (USA), First Presbyterian Church celebrates environmental stewardship as a way to express our calling to be gardeners in God’s garden. Riding bicycles is a great way to encourage fitness, reduce carbon footprints, and socialize. When you ride a bicycle, you notice more details along the way, like the flowers, smells, sounds, and sights. Following the service, riding along the bike path on a Sunday morning is a blessing.

There are two bicycle tour groups coming through town this summer that are staying at the church for a couple of nights. One is raising funding and awareness about Multiple Sclerosis (Bike the US for MS), and the other is focused on Affordable Housing (Bike n’ Build). The Blessing of the Bicycles is also a way to honor the hard work and dedication of so many people trying to make the world a better place.

You are invited to City Beach! Bring your bicycle, and your friends! Breathe deep the joy of life and the blessings God provides. As the living Christ creates and sustains all things, focus on each moment as God’s loving Presence transforms your heart.

Andy Kennaly is pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Sandpoint.

Thankfulness is more than a one-time event

Turkey sandwiches. Turkey noodle soup. Pie for breakfast?! Leftovers are one of the best parts of the holiday. For a few days following Thanksgiving, we are reminded that thankfulness is not a one-time event. More than an abundance of food, thankfulness is a state of mind, an orientation of the heart, and a continual reflection of a truer reality.

The demolition has started. The front steps at First Presbyterian Church fell victim to the jackhammer as concrete was removed, one chunk at a time. The steps are being replaced and the roof over them updated. A project of this type takes coordination, money, time, and people who understand what the larger purpose is. Practical experience helps, along with courage to try new things.
