W. Glacier cell-tower proposal resurfaces

A proposed cell tower on Belton Stage Road near West Glacier that was rejected a year ago by the Flathead Board of Adjustment is back on the Aug. 7 hearing agenda for consideration.
Don Herbert and Clearview Tower II LLC are asking for a conditional-use permit to place a cellular communications tower on a 20-acre tract at 1291 Belton Stage Road in the Canyon Area Land Use Regulatory System.
Last August Don and Paul Herbert asked for a zoning variance to allow a taller, 150-foot tower, but were turned down by the Board of Adjustment amid neighborhood opposition to the tower. This time around the applicants are asking for a 108-foot cellular communications tower.
West Glacier’s current cellphone coverage ends near Apgar for most providers, although it can extend as far as Lake McDonald Lodge for some providers, depending on the phone and the weather.
The Middle Canyon Land Use Advisory Committee will consider the cell-tower request at a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, in the gymnasium of West Glacier Elementary School,160 Old Bridge Road, in West Glacier. The committee’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Adjustment for its public hearing at 6 p.m. Aug. 7 in the second-floor conference room of the South Campus Building, 40 11 St. W. Kalispell. Board of Adjustment decisions are considered final.
The Board of Adjustment has two other public hearings scheduled on Aug. 7:
- J & J Ranch LLC is asking for a conditional-use permit to establish a camp and retreat center on 314 acres at 1875 Voerman Road near Whitefish. The property is located in the Southeast Rural Whitefish Zoning District and the Haskill Basin East Zoning District, and is zoned agricultural with a 20-acre minimum lot size.
- Bill Tanner, on behalf of Ridgeline Capital LLC, is appealing a county zoning administrator decision that the signage for storage units violates the Rosewater planned-unit development overlay. The property is located north of Rose Crossing, east of Rose Bud Lane near Kalispell and includes about 3 acres. Tanner is the developer of the Rosewater water-skiing subdivision in the Rose Crossing area.
