It was a weekend of celebrations for 30 Mineral County high school graduates over Memorial Weekend. St. Regis and Superior held graduations on Sunday and Alberton held theirs on Monday.
Eight graduates received their diploma from St. Regis, while both Superior and Alberton had 11 graduates. The gyms were filled with families and community members to support their students as they celebrate this milestone in their lives. With diploma in hand, they will embark on their journey forward to college, work, and military careers.
Before diplomas were handed out, guest speakers and faculty members gave the graduating class of 2018 words of wisdom and advice. Including speeches from class Salutatorian and Valedictorian, which was Justice Tate and Anna Sanford for St. Regis; Hailey Kelly and Makenzie Mueller for Superior; and Sara Knapp and Gerald Peterson for Alberton.
An emotional part of the events were the Senior Video Presentations where each student’s baby photos through high school were shown while set to music, leaving few dry eyes in the crowd. College scholarships were also awarded as follows:
Superior students:
Wyatt O’Day — Gaylord Green $8,000; DUI Task Force $500; National Wild Turkey Federation Dr. James Earl Kennamer Scholarship $1,500; Mineral County Conservation District $1,000; Ruth Berneking Scholarship $700.
Kaleb Ververis — Blackfoot Telecommunications $1,000; Mason Lodge $500; Mathew Michael Palagi Scholarship $500; Women In Timber $300; Mineral County Community Foundation $500
Hailey Kelly — Mason Lodge $500; Chery Tourtelotte $500; Women In Timber $300; Edna Jensen $300; Mineral County Community Foundation $500; TrailWest Bank $500; Mineral County Conservation District $1,000.
Madison Lommen — William E. Sears $500.
McKenzie Muller — Bruce Fryar $150.
Drake Neil — Elks Most Improved $100.

Sara Knapp — Adrian College Trustee Award of $18,000 per year for total of $72,000 for four years; William E. Sears $1,000.
Gerald Peterson — MSU Premier Scholarship $2,500; Minuteman Scholarship $10,000; William E. Sears $1,000.
Isaac Warren — Friends of Kiwanis $250; Trailwest Bank $250; Women in Timber $300; Alberton Senior Center $500; Al Manuel $350; Hank Roat $250.

Mineral County sends tax bill to Forest Service
The Forest Service will be receiving a property tax bill from Mineral County this year. County Commissioners Laurie Johnston, Roman Zylawy and Duane Simons signed the letter March 9 requesting property tax revenue for 2017. The “historic letter” as defined by Rep. Denley Loge, describes the plight Mineral County is facing as options to fund the county have dried up.
Colorado woman dies after vehicle gets stuck
An early evening call received by Mineral County dispatch on Friday, March 17, ended in tragedy. The body of Colorado resident Debra Ann Koziel was found in the Fish Creek area by a search team the following Tuesday afternoon. Her death was determined to be the result of exposure to weather.
No major flooding as snow thaws
“As the ground starts thawing, the rocks start falling,” was a post made on the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page last week. A photo accompanied the post of a big rock which had come down on Mullan Road East near the Big Eddy fishing access in Superior on March 11. “Please be aware of your surroundings and pay attention while driving,” they warned in the post.
