Students win National Merit Scholarships

COEUR d’ALENE — The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced last week the local winners of National Merit Scholarships paid for by U.S. colleges and universities.
Emily Fooe of Coeur d’Alene High School won a scholarship to Arizona State University. She enrolled early at ASU’s Barrett Honor College to study computer science and software engineering.
Ashley Kaitz of Lake City High School won a scholarship to the University of Alabama, where she intends to study foreign languages.
Thomas Taylor of Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy won a scholarship to the University of Idaho, where he intends to study biomedical engineering.
The awards provide these National Merit Scholars between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the awarding institution.
On May 9, the NMSC announced Clara M. Zaragoza of Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy had won a $2,500 scholarship paid for by NMSC, good at any accredited U.S. college or university. She intends to study public policy.
An additional group of Scholars will be announced in July.
