Libraries throughout the region have reading fun in store this summer for every age group, from newborns to adults.
Karen Yother, youth services coordinator for the Community Library Network comprising libraries in Athol, Harrison, Hayden, Pinehurst, Post Falls, Rathdrum and Spirit Lake, explains that for every minute a child spends reading a book through one of those libraries, the child earns one point that counts toward prizes such as a pass to the North Idaho State Fair, sunglasses, and “book bucks” for getting new reads. Books, magazines, and audiobooks all count, she said. Every 100 points over 1,100 earns readers entry into a grand prize drawing for a family pass to the North Idaho State Fair or a class at Gizmo CDA.
“We want people to discover something new every day,” Yother said.
While youngsters are reading, the library network also has a reading program for adults to earn points while reading, volunteering, or attending community concerts. A Kindle Fire is among the prizes. Best yet, adults who read are modeling good behavior for their youngsters, said Yother. Both youth and adult summer reading programs use the Beanstack Tracker app to track books and activities that count toward prizes.
Coeur d’Alene Public Library, a separate library system from the Community Library Network, also offers summer reading incentives for all ages. In addition to special programs for children and teens every week, kids can also earn prizes for keeping track of the time they spend reading or being read to. For each three hours they receive a prize. Reading logs and prizes are available at the main library downtown and at the Lake City branch, which is housed at Skyway Elementary School for the summer.
Teens can track their reading time and collect prizes as well at both locations.
Adults can vote for their favorite novel in PBS’s Great American Read program.
