ROYAL CITY — A tradition in years gone by at Royal High School made a comeback Feb. 20 as students, faculty and community members mounted their noble steeds for a night of Donkey Basketball.

“It was a lot of fun,” said FFA director, Rick Kannely.

The fundraising event, which was held at the Royal High School gym, brought in about $1,000, and saw four teams of about five players each compete for the trophy. The teams taking to the court were the Average Joes, Team Teachers, Bench Warmers, and Pranksters for Life. In the end it was Team Teachers who trotted away with the win.

Donkey Basketball was formerly a tradition of Royal High School that served as a fundraiser for the FFA club.

Proceeds from the evening’s event went towards the Future Farmers of America (FFA), Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and the Technical Students of America (TSA) clubs, who all sponsored the event.

The donkeys and game gear were provided by Donkey Sports Inc. of Entiat. The donkeys wore rubber shoes to help protect the gym floor, and towels and shovels were also on hand to help keep the area clean.

Kannely plans to continue the tradition going forward.

“I think next year’s event will be even more fun,” he said.
