BONNERS FERRY — On Thursday, Feb. 22, at 8:48 a.m., South Boundary Fire protection District received a call about a structure fire on 20 Mile Road. South Boundary, along with Boundary Ambulance EMS Chief Lindsay responded, and North Bench Fire was called out for mutual aid. Paradise Valley Fire District was also called to provide assistance.

Lindsay was first on scene, followed closely by South Boundary Fire Chief Tony Rohrwasser. The long, snowy road made it a difficult task for the first responders, and they had to chain up one of their water tenders.

The structure was a residential fifth wheel trailer with an addition built onto it. Upon arriving on the scene, Rohrwasser said the structure was totally involved and was already on the ground. They set to work quickly to get the fire under control.

“Everybody did fantastic,” said Rohrwasser. “It was miserable, cold weather and difficult conditions, with the water turning to ice.”

The fire was contained by early afternoon, but the structure was a complete loss.

Another fire broke out on Hickory Road at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24. South Boundary responded to the fire that had started from a chimney and had spread into the attic. Although part of the roof near the chimney had to be cut away to stop the fire, the fast response and action from the volunteer firefighters enabled them to save the house.

“I want to say a special thanks to all of our volunteers,” said Rohrwasser.
