March 6, 1968 — TOP BULL

All Around Top Bull at the Seventh Annual Panhandle Beef Breeders Sale Saturday was shown by Denny Shields. The Polled Hereford won the top bull trophy and then brought the high price of the afternoon sale, $700.

FISHERMAN’S ASSN. MEETS SUNDAY

The Commercial Fisherman’s Assn. will hold a meeting on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Eagles hall, with election of officers as the main business.

TIMBLIN IS TOP RECRUITER

Once a month, Bud Timblin, Sandpoint postal employee, trades his post office uniform for his Navy chief petty officer uniform. The 740-mile round trip from Sandpoint to the Sand Point Naval Air Station in Seattle is enough to force most men to miss an occasional drill, but Chief Timblin has not missed one. The 26-year veteran is also known as the squadron’s top recruiter. In his years as a reservist, he has brought over 56 newcomers into the reserve program not counting his own son Brian, who enlisted in December.

POWER COMPANY’S ANNUAL WARNING

Pacific Power & Light Co. repeated its annual safety warning about the hazard of flying kites near electric power lines, cautioning against using metallic string or thread.

March 6, 1918 — IDAHO HOTEL SOLD

The Idaho hotel changed hands when the property, including the building known as the Idaho hotel, also the restaurant and cottage, was purchased for $37,700 by C.C. Howard from the Klockman brothers. Mr. and Mrs. Howard have taken up residence in this city, occupying the cottage north of the hotel property.

MAN SENTENCED ON VAGRANCY CHARGE

When asked where he secured the Red Cross button he was wearing, Claude Mauch told Judge Whitaker he “found the damn thing.” Mauch was picked up on a charge of vagrancy and at his trial, admitted he was an I.W.W. member, but this had nothing whatever to do with his arrest.

He was sentenced to ten days in county jail on the vagrancy charge. Attorney Taylor, for the prosecution, said a complaint against him will be filed under a statute making it a misdemeanor to wear insignia of any organization of which the wearer is not a member.

WAR RECIPE - CORNMEAL COOKIES

Half cup melted fat; half cup molasses; half cup syrup; one egg; six tablespoons sour milk; half cup cornmeal, half tsp. soda, one cup wheat flour.

Combine fat, molasses, syrup, egg and milk. Sift dry ingredients and combine with liquid. Drop from spoon onto greased pan; bake in moderate oven 15 minutes. Recipe makes 55 to 60 cookies.
