n World Cup — Mark Engle posted his career best WC finish last week at Kransja Gora, Slovenia with 19th in Slalom. He was the top US finisher.

n Fast Blast — Each March 49 Degrees North hosts a speed event for the Youth Ski League. Last weekend more than a hundred young speedsters competed. The race was very well organized and run under sunny skies (a seeming anomaly for speed events). Local racers were: U14 Boys – Branson Whitby 7th and 8th in the two Super Gs; U14 Girls – Laura Boge 8th and 7th in the Super Gs; U12 Boys – Caden Billstin 13th in one Super G and 11th in Giant Slalom and Crosby Schmidt 11th in one Super G. Other local competitors were Jeru Gidley, Dakota Landwehr and Halle Wyman. The next event for these competitors will be League Finals in late March.

n Western Region Championships — Due to our marvelous snowpack and SARS’ reputation for putting on quality races, the Western Region Championships were relocated on short notice. Schweitzer will host the top U21 and below talent in the West, plus the Vail Ski Club, March 13-18. The event will feature two each of Super G, Giant Slalom and Slalom. This is an enormous workload for one club, considering they just hosted the speed series and are still on the line for the U14 Buddy Werner Championships in April. SARS is welcoming volunteers for a variety of jobs, especially weekdays.

Contact Jamie Landwehr at 946-7859 if you can help or have questions.

It’s an outdoor sport ... — What a weekend. The Edge can’t remember a stranger set of events — rain, high winds, very dense fog, lightning, then a sudden freeze. Not many sports present the number of variables to the athletes as ski racing (Alpine or Nordic). Our competitors braved it all and persevered.

World Cup — Tommy Ford had a busy weekend in Chamonix, France. He placed 16th in the parallel slalom and fourth in the parallel giant slalom. That said, he narrowly missed injury in the giant slalom when he lost a ski and skidded across his opponent’s path.
