A Seder Meal is a reenactment of the Passover Meal that was first shared by God’s people in ancient Egypt just before they left for the Promised Land. To remember how the Lord passed over them, spared them from death, and would bring them freedom from years of slavery, they were to celebrate this meal every year.

It is the same meal that Jesus shared with His disciples the night before He was put to death on the cross. As they shared it, it became the Lord’s Supper, as Jesus gives of Himself to the disciples of that day, and for us to this day. The Seder is a feast that includes reading, drinking wine, telling stories of the history of God’s people, eating special foods, and singing. This meal is rich in meaning and purpose for us today. It commemorates God’s mighty act of deliverance of His people. It helps followers of Jesus to appreciate their Jewish roots. It points us toward God’s Passover Lamb, Jesus. It helps us understand the origin of Communion, the Lord’s Supper. The emphasis with this meal is not on political freedom, but on freedom from the curse and punishment of sin provided in the death of Jesus. This meal is designed to be beautiful. Passover is a time of joy, praise, and fellowship.

On Thursday, March 29, at 6 p.m., Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1900 Pine St., in Sandpoint will be hosting a Seder Meal as part of its Holy Week activities including Good Friday and Easter. You are welcome to take part in this celebration as we walk together towards the cross and the now empty tomb. Please call the Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church office at 263-7516, or stop by at 1900 Pine St., to reserve a place. Registration will be closed on Sunday, March 25, as we need to know in advance how much food to prepare. A freewill offering will be collected to assist with expenses. You are invited to walk along in our Lenten journey as we remember the Passover with a Seder Meal, and as we prepare for Jesus’ death on Good Friday, and the unbridled joy of His resurrection at Easter.
