PULLMAN — Washington State University’s spring break is officially in full swing and troopers with the Washington State Patrol will be conducting a spring break emphasis this week to ensure safe travel during the break.

Despite the WSU spring break not starting until today, troopers bumped up their presence on local roads last week. In particular, the WSP reports drivers should expect to see an increased police presence on state Route 26 and state Route 195. Troopers will mainly be focusing on violations that could cause collisions, like speeding, unsafe passing, distracted driving and impaired driving.

“Motorists should always be prepared for changing road and weather conditions. Road and weather conditions are available by downloading the mobile app from Washington State Department of Transportation or by calling 511,” stated the WSP in a news release. “Students who become drowsy while driving across the state should stop and rest. Drowsy driving crashes are extremely dangerous and can often be fatal.”

The patrol also recommends motorists ensure their vehicle is prepared for a long trip before heading out. Things to always check include vehicle fluids, air pressure in tires and having extra food, clothing and water in a vehicle in case of an emergency.
