PINEHURST — Idaho State Police Cpl. Kevin Kessler and his drug detection K9 Ace were excited to get back to work this week following a lengthy medical hiatus. What they probably didn’t expect though was sniffing out a substantial marijuana bust just two days in.

On Wednesday at approximately 8:25 a.m., Kessler and another fellow trooper conducted a traffic stop on eastbound Interstate 90 at milepost 45 near Pinehurst for a moving violation.

Upon contact with the driver, 39-year old Corey Ramey of Monterey, Minn., the troopers suspected that he was hiding something.

“He was showing indications of drug trafficking,” Kessler said.

Kessler then utilized Ace’s keen nose to see if their suspicions were warranted. As it turned out, they were right on the money.

Ace positively alerted on the vehicle for the presence of illegal substances which allowed them to conduct a search. The troopers found approximately 62 pounds of marijuana in the back of the vehicle along with one pound of hash oil.

Ramey was arrested for trafficking over 25 pound of marijuana and booked into the Shoshone County Jail in Wallace.

ISP says that Ramey has a prior conviction for drug distribution while he was in the military.

When it comes to arrests like this, Kessler explains that it comes with the territory.

“Its the nature of I90,” he said.

It is believed that Ramey was on his way back to Minnesota to sell the marijuana that he procured in Washington.
