OLYMPIA — Local high school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to learn about law enforcement and careers in the field by attending the Washington State Patrol’s Kiwanis Youth Law Enforcement Career Camp this summer.

The camp will be held at the Washington State Patrol Academy in Shelton July 22-28. Selected students will receive hands-on experience during the camp and receive instruction on evidence gathering, forensic science, courtroom procedures, firearms, weapons safety, automated firearms training simulation, military drills, flag ceremony drills, stress management and preparation, computers in law enforcement, physical fitness, self-defense/defensive tactics, integrity in police work, water safety and police ethics.

Students will also gain exposure to current problems in law enforcement, challenges officers face and handling situations in a “professional manner.”

“Police departments from around the state provide officers as staff members to instruct and serve as counselors. Guest speakers from various agencies provide first-hand information to the students,” reads a release from the WSP. “This gives the students a variety of experiences and exposure to federal, state, county and local law enforcement as a possible career path. Many students who attend this week-long camp go on to have careers in the criminal justice field.”

The camp is primarily sponsored and funded by Kiwanis clubs across the state. Applications are due May 6 and can be downloaded by visiting www.wsp.wa.gov/event/2018-kiwanis-law-enforcement-camp. Space is limited to 26 students.
