MOSES LAKE — Manta Ray Aquatics hosted the Farewell to Short Course swim meet at the Tony St. Onge Pool of Dreams.

This was a three-day competition comprised of just about every individual swimming event there is. Athletes from around the Inland Empire traveled to Moses Lake to compete in this event, which is the last chance to qualify for regionals and sectionals, both taking place later in March.

In addition, this meet also provided a great competition opportunity for all swimmers of every level of ability. While 43 athletes competed under the Moses Lake banner, two young Manta Rays stood out above the crowd. One of the smallest Manta Rays, 8-year-old Marcus Quezada, blew away his competition and scored 92 points for Manta Ray Aquatics.

Quezada accomplished this amazing feat by swimming 11 events throughout the weekend, taking home six first-place finishes, two second-place finishes, and three third-place finishes.

By the end of the meet, Quezada had scored nearly double the amount of points earned by any of his teammates, of any age group or gender. Another high-scorer for MRA was 11-year-old Owen Devine. Despite only participating in the last day of the competition, Devine swept all five of his individual events, earning 50 points for Manta Ray Aquatics.

One of Devine’s first-place finishes came in the long and daunting 1,000-yard freestyle event at the very end of the competition. Despite having never swam the event before, Devine managed to pull off a win for Manta Ray Aquatics in the event, finishing in an impressive time of 14:34.84.

Manta Ray Aquatics now looks ahead to hosting the IMX Dual Pentathlon in April.
