Prep roundup: Moses Lake softball starts season 1-1

Moses Lake split a pair of non-league games to start its season.
Brooke Richardson hit a RBI double in the eighth inning and Moses Lake defeated University 11-10.
Richardson, Brooklyn Bailey and Savannah Ashley had three hits apiece. The Chiefs led 7-1 after three innings before the Titans rallied.
Gina Skinner pitched the first five innings and Ashley contributed three innings of relief.
Curtis scored five runs in the second inning and seven runs in the fifth to beat Moses Lake 12-2.
Moses Lake opens Columbia Basin Big Nine play Tuesday, 4 p.m., against West Valley at home.
Othello 8-16, Ephrata 7-14
OTHELLO — Othello won by way of walk-off in its doubleheader with Ephrata.
Trailing 7-2 in the first game, Breanna Marquina hit a grand slam and Jazlyhn Verduzco hit a RBI double to tie the game. Janissa Garza followed with a walk-off hit.
Marquina continued her big day with two home runs in Game 2. Marquina’s two-run blast in the eighth inning gave Othello a 16-14 win and doubleheader sweep.
Othello also completed a triple play for the first time under head coach Rudy Ochoa.

Boys soccer
Eisenhower 2, Moses Lake 1
YAKIMA — Moses Lake hung with Eisenhower on the road before succumbing 2-1.
The Cadets broke a 1-1 tie mid-way through the second half.
The Chiefs had their chances and eventually broke through when Anthony Cortez was fouled in the box. Erik Shaporda canned the penalty kick to tie the game.
Moses Lake hosts Eastmont Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Quincy 4, Grandview 2
GRANDVIEW — Quincy raced to a 4-0 lead and beat Grandview 4-2.
“Overall, I was very pleased,” head coach Arturo Guerrero said. “I was able to play all my guys.”
Jose Lopez opened the Jacks’ scoring in the 19th minute.
The Jacks added one more goal in the first half and two more in the second.
Jodani Osuna and Mario Jacobo scored for the Greyhounds.
Quincy hosts Ephrata in the Battle of the Basin Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Selah 3, Ephrata 0
EPHRATA — Ephrata was dealt its first loss by Selah 3-0.
The Vikings scored three goals in the second half, two from Brandon Vallejo.

Track and field
Moses Lake boys, girls finish first at Windbreaker Invitational
MATTAWA — Moses Lake boys and girls finished first at the Windbreaker Invitational.
The boys edged out College Place 28-25.
The Chiefs ran away in the girls’ competition with 51 points. Madi Krogh finished first in the 100 and 200-meter dash.

Handful of locals win at Papa Wells
YAKIMA — A few local athletes picked up wins at the Papa Wells Invitational.
Ephrata’s McCall DeChenne, the reigning 2A state champion in the 100 hurdles, won that event in 16.81 seconds.
Royal’s Tucker Janett and Noelia Juarez finished first in the 100 and 400 meters, respectively.

Girls basketball
Moses Lake’s Rathbun scores five in all-state game
UNIVERSITY PLACE — Moses Lake standout Abby Rathbun scored five points in the WSGBCA Senior All-State game at Curtis High School.
Rathbun was 2-for-2 from the field, had two rebounds and two steals.
Jade Loville scored 23 points and 4A beat 3A 104-59.

Big Bend takes four from Grays Harbor
MOSES LAKE — Big Bend swept two doubleheaders against Grays Harbor.
The Vikings won two games on Saturday 10-0 and 10-4. The Vikings followed that performance with two more wins on Sunday 15-1 and 12-0.
Moses Lake High School graduate Cade Tunstall pitched six shutout innings in Sunday’s 12-0 win.
