SHS students earn academic honors

Sandpoint Elks Lodge No. 1376 has announced students of the month for Sandpoint High School for March April.
To be selected as an Elk’s student of the month, students must meet guidelines for character, citizenship, service, scholarship and leadership.
The Elks actively seek to reward youth through many different programs including scholarship awards, Hoop Shoot tournaments, dictionary donations to third graders, drug awareness programs and many other activities and programs.
Sandpoint Elks Lodge award thousands of dollars in scholarships and local students also received an additional money in state and national Elk scholarships. The Elks are the third largest awarder of scholarships in the county and several students have received large scholarships from the state and national level of Elks.
- Cienna Roget, daughter of Andrew Roget and Mindy Roget, was named an Elks’ student of the month for March.
A senior at Sand-point High School, she has been a member of National Honor Society since her sophomore year, and I has been club president for two years. She has regularly volunteered at Bonner General Hospital for three years.
In addition, Roget has been an editor for the Cedar Post, Sandpoint High School’s student newspaper, for two years, and is currently the newspaper’s managing editor.
Additionally, she has participated in Student Leadership for two years, and is currently serving as the senior class president. Roget has been a member of Interact Club since her freshman year, and has served as the club’s secretary for two years. She has participated in Math Club for three years, and was vice president of the club during her junior year. During her sophomore year, Ishe participated in Model United Nations and represented the country of Estonia at the national conference in New York City.
Roget recently became a National Merit Finalist for my score on the PSAT. I am also a Nationally Recognized Hispanic Scholar. She has been named as co-salutatorian for the Class of 2018. She is ranked fourth in the 239-member class and has a GPA of 4.429.
- Payton Allen Finney, son of John and Christa Finney, has been named an Elks’ student of the month for April.
A senior at Sand-point High School, he has a 4.339 GPA, and is ranked 14th in his class. He is a member of National Honor Society, Symphonic Band, and the Bulldog track & field team.
He enjoys the outdoors and graphic design, and plans on attending the University of Idaho to pursue a bachelor’s degree in virtual technology and design.
- Erin Meek, daughter of Mary and Geoff Meek, was named an Elks’ student of the month for April.
A senior at Sand-point High School, she has a 3.8 un- weighted GPA and a 4.1 weighted, ranking 40th in her class of 239.
Erin has been involved in a multitude of activities offered at the high school, such as cross-country, National Honor Society and the journalism program for three years. She currently serves as lifestyles editor for the high school newspaper, Pep Club president in student government and vice president for the Outdoor Adventure Club.
Apart from school activities, she also volunteered as a high school intern for the Selkirk Outdoor Leadership and Education non-profit, as she taught the curriculum of SnowSchool, a winter ecology curriculum that teaches fifth-grade students about snow science.
She plans on attending the University of Montana next year studying cognitive neuroscience with an emphasis in social work.
