SANDPOINT — A Newport man has been arrested on allegations that he threatened a woman with a knife and held her against her will earlier this year.
Joshua Don Haney is charged with aggravated assault, second-degree kidnapping and misdemeanor domestic battery. Haney made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Tuesday via video link with the jail.
Judge Tera Harden imposed a reduced bail of $20,000 and entered an order forbidding Haney from having any contact with the alleged victim, court records indicate. Haney is utilizing the services of private counsel.
The charges date back to Feb. 22, when Haney’s ex-girlfriend reported the incident to Priest River Police, according to a probable cause affidavit. The woman, 31, told police she got into an argument with Haney at a Jefferson Street residence over the contents of her phone and he berated her. The woman left, but was persuaded to return with a text message.
The woman told police Haney continued to berate her and pushed her to a bedroom, where he allegedly kicked her in the jaw and wrestled with her while he interrogated her about her relationships and examining the contents of her phone, the affidavit said.
The alleged victim said Haney removed her pants and said that he could not nor would not let her leave, according to the affidavit. Haney retrieved a knife and allegedly held against her throat, back and other parts of her body, the affidavit said. He also allegedly manhandling her nose and ear, in addition to forcing her arm behind her back.
After four hours, the affidavit said, the woman resolved to leave the residence, but was pinned up against a wall, prompting her to feign a fainting spell. Haney allegedly produced a second knife and threatened to commit a murder/suicide, court documents indicate.
Haney, 36, could not be located immediately after the allegations were reported, prompting him to become the subject of a $50,000 arrest warrant. Court records do not indicate whether Haney was picked up on the warrant or whether he surrendered voluntarily.
A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Wednesday.
