Sravasti Abbey hosting variety of events and workshops

This spring, monastics from Sravasti Abbey, the Buddhist monastery near Newport, Wash., will offer talks, retreats, and courses both at the Abbey, 692 Country Lane in Newport, and at venues throughout the Inland Northwest.

Practicing in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, ordained nuns and monks as well as lay people live and train at the abbey. People of all faiths and backgrounds are welcomed to visit.

Upcoming events include:

- April 2-May 14, Mondays, 6:30 -8 p.m.

Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane

Buddhist Meditation with Ven. Thubten Semkye and Ven. Tenzin Tsepal. Topics are drawn from the book, Working with Anger.

- April 3, 6:30 p.m.

North Idaho College, Coeur d’Alene “Connected in A Divided World,” public talk with Ven. Thubten Chodron explores the common values that hold us together as a society.

- April 8, 9:45 a.m.-3 p.m.

Sravasti Abbey, Newport, Sharing the Dharma Day & Celebration to end Winter Retreat. The day includes guided meditation, a public talk, vegetarian potluck, and a special ceremony to thank volunteers and conclude Sravasti Abbey’s six-week silent meditation retreat. A monthly event at the Abbey, Sharing the Dharma Day will also take place May 6 and June 3.

- April 27-29 – Sravasti Abbey, Newport

“The Kindness Retreat,” with Ven. Thubten Jigme and Ven. Tenzin Tsepal offer teachings and guided meditations to help develop kindness.

- May 23 – Auntie’s Bookstore, Spokane

“Approaching the Buddhist Path”, book launch and talk. Venerable Thubten Chodron reads from the new book she co-authored with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

- May 25-28 – Sravasti Abbey ­

“How to See Yourself and You Really Are” residential course. This Memorial Day weekend course includes teachings and meditation with Ven. Thubten Chodron on the logical basis for cultivating love and compassion.

- June 8-15 – Sravasti Abbey, Newport

“Exploring Buddhism for Young Adults,” teachings, mediations and discussion for young people aged 18-29. The course is open to young people of all faiths and includes lots of outdoor time in Sravasti Abbey’s beautiful forest and meadows.

- June 16 – Museum of Arts and Culture, Spokane. 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

“Buddhists Monastics at the MAC,” public talk and meditation. Ven. Thubten Chodron speaks about founding America’s first Tibetan Buddhist monastery for Western monks and nuns, Sravasti Abbey, and its place in the culture of the Inland Northwest. The afternoon session includes an introduction to meditation by Ven. Thubten Chonyi.
