Post Falls, Lake City golfers win

SANDPOINT — The Golden Bear’s only Idaho handiwork was enjoyed by area high school teams on Monday, as The Idaho Club played host to the Sandpoint Invitational.
The Jack Nicklaus Design course can punish wayward shots, which makes the Lake City boys’ winning team score of 307 a pretty solid showing. The Timberwolves, led by Cameron Johnson’s 72, finished a full 13 shots ahead of second-place Coeur d’Alene. Davan Sandford (76) and Ryan Chapman (79) also broke 80 for Lake City.
“Overall it was a terrifc team effort,” Timberwolves boys coach Troy Anderson said. “One of our goals this year was to win a tournament, and I’m proud of how they bounced back from a tough day on Friday (at the Kraus Invitational).”
While Post Falls tied Lewiston for third, Trojan standout Cameron Flores (72) earned medalist honors, topping Lake City’s Johnson in a one-hole playoff.
Coeur d’Alene’s boys were led by Brayden Ogle’s 78, while Dylan Knight’s 80 helped Lakeland take fifth in the eight-team field.
“It was a good tournament on a tough course. Conditions were better than expected,” CHS golf coach Bryan Duncan said. “Congratulations to Lake City — their boys had a great day.”
In girls action, Post Falls tied for first with Lewiston as each team shot a 376. The Trojans were led by Renee Mosby (84) and Hannah Larson (89).
Lake City’s Kyla Currie won medalist honors, shooting a 76 to beat Moscow standout Makena Rauch by two strokes.
“Kyla has been playing really good golf lately, so it was great to see that pay off today,” Timberwolves girls coach Corey Owen said.
Lakeland finished third as a team, led by Syo Suko’s 90 and Madeline Neff’s 91.
Martina Hicks’ 83 led Coeur d’Alene’s girls to a sixth-place finish.
The Idaho Club opened for play on Sunday, so the high schoolers were among the first to play the tough track on Monday.
“They mowed the greens this morning, so they were fairly quick,” said Sandpoint coach Tom Tharp, as the host Bulldog offered up some great hospitality. “They all got hamburgers, and everybody seemed to have a great time out there.”
Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and Sandpoint are at the Lakeland Invitational on Friday, with the girls at The Links and the boys at Twin Lake Village.
