SANDPOINT — An Elmira man is scheduled to be arraigned for accidentally shot a minor in the face while target shooting last year.
Brandon Guy Bowman is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm due to a previous conviction, a felony, and causing an injury to another by careless handling of a firearm, a misdemeanor. Bowman is scheduled to enter a plea to the charges on May 7.
Bowman, 44, was ordered to stand trial in 1st District Court following a preliminary hearing in magistrate court on April 18, according to court documents.
Bowman accidentally shot the boy, who appears to be of high school age, on May 9, 2017, although the injury was originally claimed to be the result of a motorcycle crash. The boy’s mother, however, doubted the explanation because there were no other injuries on the boy.
The gunshot wound was described in court documents as a grazing injury that extended from below his chin to the side of his neck. The wound measured nearly 3 inches long, court documents indicate.
Charges against Bowman were brought earlier this year, following a Bonner County Sheriff’s Office investigation, court records indicate. Bowman allegedly admitted accidentally shooting the boy, according to a probable cause affidavit. Bowman is barred from possessing a firearm due to a third-degree assault conviction in Stevens County, Wash.
If convicted, Bowman faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine on the weapons possession charge and up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for the discharge offense, according to Idaho Code.
