Students do well in math competition

Thirty-eight sixth through eighth grade students from Columbia Falls Junior High participated in the 2018 Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Math Contest at Flathead Valley Community College recently. Students competed in number concepts, dimensions and shapes, potluck, foundations, and team tests. Students who earned an honorable mention scored in the top 35 percent of their grade and students who earned a superior scored in the top 15 percent of their grade.

Columbia Falls results included:

6th grade (competed on 7th grade tests)

Welcome Chapman, Ruby Davis, Bradley Fields (1 Honorable Mention), Lotus Helland (1 Superior), Sophia Ilin, Nico Kane (1 Honorable Mention), Codi Mastin, Hope McAtee (1 Superior), Ilah McKenzie,(1 Honorable Mention), Madison Moultray, Haden Peters, Logan Peterson, Sophie Robbins, and Michael James Toftum (1 Honorable Mention)

7th grade

Dale Blickhan (2 Honorable Mentions), Whitney Bodily, Elyse Byrd, Zoey Byrd, Eddie Mae Chisholm (1 Honorable Mention, (2 Superiors), Katherine Crockett, Siri Erickson (2 Superiors), Gwen Jarvis (2 Honorable Mentions), Conner Malmberg (1 Honorable Mention), Eloise McKeon (1 Honorable Mention), Jaeger Mohr (2 Honorable Mentions), Walton Nichols (1 Honorable Mention), Hunter Pyles (1 Honorable Mention), Elaine Reed (1 Honorable Mention, 1 Superior), Elli Sandstrom (2 Superiors), Sheridan Skerritt (3 Superiors), Emma Stoddard (1 Honorable Mention, 1 Superior), Eric Sullivan (1 Honorable Mention), Brie Treat, and Kya West (1 Honorable Mention)

8th grade:

Griffin Conger, Mae Anderson, Julia Martin (1 Honorable Mention, 2 Superiors), and Madeline Robison (1 Honorable Mention)

Two students received special recognition by earning top scores compared to all 7th and 8th grade participants in Montana. Sheridan Skerritt (7th grade) earned 2 Superior scores (top 15 percent) and Julia Martin (8th grade) earned 1 Honorable Mention (top 35 percent) and 1 Superior (top 15 percent) scores in Montana.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
