Bird Friendly Day at museum Saturday

MOSES LAKE — Birds, bird watching and bird habitat will be among the bird-centered subjects during the annual “Bird Friendly Day” at the Moses Lake Museum & Art Center Saturday.
Bird Friendly Day will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the museum, 401 South Balsam St. in the Moses Lake City Hall. The “Creature Teachers” will have a live bird show in the Civic Center Auditorium, and other activities will spill out from the classroom into the hallway.
It’s the Free Family Saturday program for May, and it’s turned into an annual event. Admission to all events is free.
The Creature Teacher show is scheduled for noon and 1 p.m., said museum director Freya Liggett. “They’ve joined us before,” Liggett said. Tickets will be required and can be picked up before the presentations. Auditorium seating is limited, so families are encouraged to pick up their tickets early.
The presentation is a close look at birds – how birds fly, what birds eat, and lots of bird-related information. Kids also will get a really close look at individual birds. And the Creature Teachers also bring frogs, snakes and other reptiles.
Bird Friendly Day is the subject of a coloring contest; kids can download the picture from the museum’s website or pick up a copy at the museum. Entries will be accepted through Friday, and the winners will be announced Saturday.
The Central Basin Audubon Society will show children how to make a backyard bird feeder. Kids will learn what makes good bird food, options that will actually attract birds to a feeder, and what kind of plants make a yard bird-friendly.
A birdwatching scavenger hunt usually is a part of Bird Friendly Day, and for 2018 it’s in Civic Park between City Hall and the Moses Lake Public Library.
Organizations will have booths providing information on birds and bird habitat, wildlife and wildlife habitat, geology and other natural phenomena. They include staff from the Dry Falls Interpretive Center.
Free Family Saturday is a monthly program sponsored by the museum and paid for through the museum sponsorships, donations and the annual “Feed the Mammoth” fundraising party.

Road closures, roundabout, mean construction season underway
EPHRATA — The grass is starting to turn green, the trees are starting to leaf out, construction crews are starting to build roundabouts – hey, it’s spring. At least one roundabout project is in its final phase, held over from fall 2025. The intersection of State Route 282 and Nat Washington Way will be closed the week of April 6 to allow crews to install permanent lights. “This really is the final (closure),” wrote Grant County Administrator Tom Gaines in a media release. “The roundabout will close at 6 a.m. Monday, and we plan to reopen by Friday, possibly sooner if the work finishes early.”
Ybarra announces run for Washington Senate
QUINCY — State Representative Alex Ybarra, R-Quincy, has announced his candidacy for the Washington Senate. If he’s elected, he would replace Judy Warnick, R-Moses Lake, who announced her retirement in March.
Othello Community Museum to open April 25
OTHELLO — With a couple of new exhibits, a new heating-cooling system, rearranged displays and a thorough cleaning, the Othello Community Museum will open for the summer April 25. The goal, said Molly Popchock, museum board secretary, is to operate for a full season.
