SPIRIT LAKE — A Newport woman was killed and a Newport man left in critical condition after their motorcycle collided with a pickup truck driven by an allegedly intoxicated driver, who was arrested on several charges Friday night.
Idaho State Police reported that Jonathan A. Smith, 25, of Spirit Lake, was driving a 1992 Dodge Dakota south on State Highway 41 south of Spirit Lake just before 11 p.m. when he turned onto a side road in front of Mark J. Kondash, 49, who was driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound with Alayna C. Wright, 48, as his passenger.
Kondash struck the passenger side of Smith's vehicle. Kondash and Wright were ejected from the bike. Wright died at the scene and Kondash was transported to Kootenai Health.
"He is currently listed in critical condition," Kootenai Health communications specialist Andrea Nagel said midday Saturday.
ISP Sgt. Allen Ashby confirmed that alcohol was a factor and that Smith, who was unharmed in the wreck, was arrested on several charges.
"Jonathan Smith is in custody for charges including aggravated DUI and vehicular manslaughter, which is also a felony," Ashby said.
According to the Kootenai County Jail's inmate list, Smith was also charged with possession of a controlled substance, destroying/altering/concealing evidence, possession of paraphernalia and open container.
Ashby said Kondash's toxicology report was under investigation as of Saturday afternoon.
Both Kondash and Wright were wearing helmets. Next of kin notifications have been made.
