MOSES LAKE — It would be extreme to call it a scare, but Moses Lake was pushed in its sweep of Eisenhower.
Eisenhower pitcher Lauren Yockey kept Moses Lake’s hitters at bay — for a time — but the breakthrough eventually came and the Chiefs stayed perfect in Columbia Basin Big Nine play with wins of 12-2 and 5-0.
“When we were at their place it was, I believe, 2-1 through four innings, so it was a tight game,” head coach Mike Hofheins said. “Their pitcher is good. That Yockey girl — she’s good, solid. It’s good for us to be in a tight game and hopefully that will pay off come playoffs.”
The Cadets briefly led in the opener 2-0 before the Chiefs put together another monster inning.
A bases-loaded double by Savannah Ashley highlighted a nine-run third inning. The rally began with consecutive RBI singles from Brooke Richardson and Brooklyn Bailey.
The Chiefs continued to extend their lead on a sacrifice fly from Madison Olson and a two-run blast by Sydney Ries.
Gina Skinner, Ashley and Bailey all hit RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth inning to enact the 10-run rule and end the game.
Despite the two runs, Ashley only allowed three hits in five innings.
Game 2 was more of a pitcher’s duel between Yockey and Skinner.
Both hurlers gave up three hits, however, the difference was in the field. The Cadets committed six errors to the Chiefs’ one.
In the second inning, Bailey scored on one of the six errors before Michelle Turner hit a two-run single.
“I kind of just went up there thinking I’m going to hit the ball and I’m going to score,” Turner said. “That’s about all I was thinking.”
Turner put the bat an another ball in the sixth inning that dropped in the infield, scoring Ries.
Moses Lake and Eastmont meet this week to decide the CBBN league championship. The Wildcats were able to keep their league title hopes alive after a pair of one-run wins over crosstown rival Wenatchee.
The series begins Tuesday in East Wenatchee.
“I think the biggest thing we have going against Eastmont is just always backing each other up and being there for each other,” Turner said.
