BUTTE — Polson finished a successful weekend at the Laverne Combo Softball Tournament with a pair of big wins Saturday — 17-5 over Miles City and 25-3 versus Colstrip.

The Pirates (14-4 overall, 6-0 Northwest A conference) finished the tournament with a 4-0 record after Friday’s victories against Laurel and Glendive.

“We had a very solid weekend,” Polson coach Larry Smith said.

“It’s getting us ready to go into the big tournaments here in a couple of weeks.

“It was good for us to be on strange fields in a strange area against teams we’ve never seen, he added.”

Josie Caye blasted a pair of two-run home runs and finished with five RBIs against Miles City. Kaelyn Smith and Kaylanna Desjarlais also homered and finished with three RBIs apiece.

Smith’s inside-the-park round-tripper was her fourth of the season.

Vanessa Kent held Miles City scoreless and surrendered just one hit in three innings of work.

A 15-run fourth inning propelled Polson in the nightcap.

“They tried three different pitchers in that inning, but our bats just wouldn’t slow down,” Smith said.

Quinn Motichka and Laurel Bitterman tallied four RBIs apiece. Caye, Smith, Marina Mayorga, Lexi Orien and Lisa Costilla all drove in two runs.

Kent struck out five in four innings.

Polson is back home at 6 p.m. Tuesday for a Northwest A clash with Ronan.
