2017 CHAMPIONS: Rocky Mountain boys, Highland girls
LOCAL QUALIFIERS: Coeur d’Alene boys; Post Falls boys; Lake City girls; Lewiston girls; Ryan Chapman, Lake City; Martina Hicks, Coeur d’Alene
NOTES: Rocky Mountain, of Meridian, is the two-time boys champ, and according to Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan, is likely to three-peat this week. “Rocky Mountain is head and shoulders ahead of everyone,” Duncan said. “Being a realist, everybody else is playing for second.” He said Rocky shot 262 in one tournament this year (Coeur d’Alene’s best is 279), with two players shooting 62s. The Grizzlies have three players who have signed with NCAA Division I schools — Sam Tidd (Oklahoma), Carson Barry (Oregon State) and Drew Reinke (Chico State) and one who has verbally committed — sophomore Jake Slocum (Iowa State). Tidd and Barry finished 1-2 at state last year, Slocum fourth as a freshman, Reinke eighth. The only advantage the North Idaho teams have is more familiarity with the Lewiston Country course, which hosted the Region 1 tournament last week. “It’s a deceptively difficult course,” Duncan said. “It has a lot of uneven lies, and that’s the great equalizer, and the rough is thick. They (the Grizzlies) would have to shoot really bad, and everybody else would have to shoot really good.” ... Coeur d’Alene’s boys are led by junior Brayden Ogle, last week’s Region 1 champion. ... Cameron Flores of Post Falls finished sixth at state last year. Post Falls’ boys are at state for the fourth straight year; the Trojans finished fifth last year, fourth in 2016 and fifth in ’15. Tanner Byers, Jacob Glenn and Dakota Wild are also back from last year’s state team. ... Lake City’s girls, led by Kyra Currie, won the regional title last week.

NOTES: The tournament was moved from the Idaho Club in Sandpoint, the only Jack Nicklaus signature course in Idaho, because of flooding on the Pack River, which runs through the course. A few holes are already partially flooded. Kudos to StoneRidge for stepping up at the last minute; StoneRidge pro Mike Deprez is a former pro at the Idaho Club, as well as its predecessor, Hidden Lakes ... Lakeland’s boys are at state for the third time in four years. Dylan Knight, medalist at last week’s Region 1 tournament, was a member of the 2015 team that finished fourth, bringing home the first trophy in program history.

NOTES: Kellogg’s boys, which won their ninth straight Intermountain League and district title last week, return all of last year’s state title team. Back are Taylor Bush, last week’s district medalist, along with Cade Finlay, Chase Jerome, Hogan Samuelson, Tyler Gibbons and Taylor Bush. Finlay was fifth last year at state, Gibbons sixth, Jerome seventh and Samuelson eighth. ... Back for Kellogg’s girls, who were second last year, are junior Kat Rauenhorst, last week’s district medalist, along with Emma Bristow, Anika Sundstrom and Morgan Nusz. ... Timberlake’s girls also qualified for state last year.
