Golf roundup: Ephrata's Peters finishes 13th at U.S. Open qualifier

SEATTLE — Washington State University commit Kenedee Peters just keeps climbing the ladder.

On Monday, the Ephrata senior, who will be going after her third 2A state medalist honor in the past four years, finished in a tie for 13th in the U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Rainier Golf & Country Club in Seattle.

LPGA and Ladies European Tour player Becky Morgan of Wales won the qualifier for the second consecutive year (72-71-143) with a two-day total of 1-under-par. German native and first-day leader Sophie Hausmann of the University of Idaho (69-75-144) finished second in the 52-golfer field to qualify for the 73rd U.S. Women’s Open May 31-June 3 at Shoal Creek in Alabama.

Peters (80-77-156) finished in a tie for 13th, seven places better than her performance in the international field last year as a high school junior.

The two-time Washington state 2A state medalist finished ahead of 11 professional golfers in the international field that featured players from 13 different countries. The Pacific Northwest Sectional field included players from as far away as the People’s Republic of China, New Zealand, Japan and Canada.

Peters, Ephrata win district titles

SUNNYSIDE — Kenedee Peters overcame the heat to shoot an even par 72 to win the District 5/6 Championship at Black Rock Creek.

Peters led an Ephrata squad that qualified five for the state tournament won the district championship with a score of 383.

Despite shooting 72, Peters won medalist honors by 11 strokes. Kathryn Crimp of Ellensburg was the district runner-up, shooting 83. East Valley’s Morgan Baum ended up third with a score of 84.

Ephrata state qualifiers: Peters 72, Chloe Mickelsen 102, Isabel Buchert 104, Payton Hagy 105, Emmie Dilling 105.

Quincy state qualifiers: Stacia Sarty 94.

ML’s Kerisa Sanislo reaches state

YAKIMA — Moses Lake’s Kerisa Sanislo shot a season-best 97 at Yakima Elks Golf Club to qualify for the 4A state tournament.

Davis’ Cassie Kim was the district champion.
